Closing without theatre · From Zero to Goals, lesson 13 of 17
Closing without theatre
Score a finished quarter honestly and write the one sentence per goal that makes the next one better.
Closing without theatre
The close is where a quarter becomes learning, or becomes a party with amnesia. Scoring is not judgment day; it is inventory: what did each goal teach us, in one sentence, while the evidence is still warm.
Brightside’s Q2 just ended. The numbers are in, they are mixed (which is what real quarters look like), and Dana has drafted the closing email.
The results, and Dana’s draft
Retainers 3→8: landed at 6. · Leads 4→10: landed at 11. · Content engine (reshaped in week six): 6 pieces a month plus the template, shipped. · Win rate 20→30%: landed at 22%. · Commitments: invoicing held all quarter; churn: one client lost in June.
Dana’s draft to the team: “WHAT a quarter! Six new retainers, leads through the roof, content machine humming. Proud of every one of you. Celebration Friday! 🎉”
What is wrong with this close?
One score starts an argument
Inventory it is. The scores go up one by one, until the content engine, and the room splits.
The goal was renegotiated in week six: 8 a month became 6 plus the template. June ran at 6, the template shipped. Leo: “that’s a 1.0.” Sam: “against the ORIGINAL eight it’s a 0.75. Otherwise what stops anyone from renegotiating their way to full marks?”
Both are protecting something real. Dana holds the pen.
What goes on the board for the content engine?
Score, sentence, separate lane, then champagne
The one sentence per score is the part people skip, and it is the part that pays: module 4 runs entirely on those sentences. A quarter closed without them leaves you next January with a column of numbers and no memory of what caused them.
Draft your honest close, mid-flight
Do not wait for the quarter to end. For your current goal, write today what an honest close would say: the score so far, and the one sentence of why. If the sentence embarrasses you, it is working.

All optional, and none of it is needed for the certificate. Each opens in a new tab, so your place in the lesson is kept.
